Education: Pennsylvania (B.S. 1906; Ph.D. 1909)
Dissertation title: Contributions to the mineralogy of the Newark group in Pennsylvania (Trans. Wagner Free Institute of Science of Philadelphia 7, February, 1910)

Comments: Started his career as a mineralogist and chemist but became interested in soil acidity and plant-soil relations and eventually moved entirely into botany.  He wrote several popular field guides to eastern wildflowers and ferns.
