Ecological Society of America Bylaws

Invasion Ecology Section

Article 1: NAME

The official name of the Section shall be “The Invasion Ecology Section of the Ecological Society of America.”

Article 2: MISSION

The Invasion Ecology section promotes research, teaching, communication, and collaboration on the ecology of biological invasions.

Article 3: ORGANIZATION

The Invasion Ecology Section shall be a subdivision of the Ecological Society of America and shall be governed by the Constitution and Bylaws of that Society.

Article 4: MEMBERS

Any member of the Ecological Society of America in good standing may become a member of the Invasion Ecology Section. Notice in writing to the Secretary of the Section or to the Business Manager of the Society, and payment of current dues, if any, shall be the only other requirements of membership.

Article 5: OFFICERS

The officers of the Invasion Ecology Section shall be a Chairperson, Secretary, the Past-Chairperson, and the Digital Media Manager. The Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, and Secretary shall be elected by majority vote taken by ballot of members of the Section. The Chairperson shall appoint the Digital Media Manager.

Article 6: CHAIRPERSON

The chairperson shall preside at the business meetings of the Section, and promote the interests of the Section. The Chairperson shall represent the Section on the Council of the Society and shall appoint committees as required to promote the interests of the Section. Such committees shall serve until the next annual meeting of the Section and may be reappointed at the discretion of the Chairperson. The Chairperson shall appoint a Digital Media Manager. The Chairperson shall serve for a term of one year.

Article 7: VICE-CHAIRPERSON

The Vice-Chairperson shall serve as a member of the section Executive Committee, program officer, and shall arrange the scientific program for the annual Section meetings. The Vice-Chairperson shall assume the duties of the Chairperson whenever that person is unable to act. Upon completion of a one year term, the Vice-Chairperson shall serve as the Chairperson of the Section.

Article 8: SECRETARY

The Secretary shall keep the records of the Section, including current membership and mailing lists. The Secretary shall attend the annual Section business meeting and report on the activities of the Section annually in the Bulletin of Ecological Society of America. The Secretary also serves as Treasurer and is responsible for corresponding with the Society Business Manager concerning expenditures made in connection with the official Section Business. The Secretary may authorize expenditures of the Section funds but must report all section expenses to the Chairperson and Society Business Manager. The Secretary shall serve for a term of two years.

Article 9: DIGITAL MEDIA MANAGER

The Digital Media Manager shall promote the section’s interests through maintaining and updating the section’s web page and social media platforms. The Digital Media Manager shall serve a term of two years.

Article 10: FINANCES

The necessary expenses of the Section shall be paid from the treasury of the Society, but in any one year, the total expenses of the Section shall not exceed the sum of the amount allotted for this purpose in the annual budget of the Society plus the amount, if any, collected as dues by the Society on behalf of the Section. No officer or member of the Section shall have the authority to incur any expense in the name of the Society, except as specified above.

Article 11: EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

In intervals between annual meetings an Executive Committee composed of the Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, and Secretary of the Section may act for the Section.

Article 12: MEETINGS

A business meeting of the Section shall be held at least once a year and the members present shall constitute a quorum. Ordinarily, this meeting shall be held concurrently with the regular annual meeting of the Ecological Society of America, but if such a concurrent meeting is not feasible, then the Executive Committee of the Section shall decide when and where the business meeting shall be held. Section meetings may be held at other times and places on-call of the Chairperson or on written request by ten members of the Section. Notice shall be sent to each member of the Section sixty days in advance of any meeting.

Article 13: PUBLICATIONS

The annual report of the Section and its official notices shall be eligible for publication in the Bulletin of the Ecological Society of America. The Section shall disseminate section news on the section’s web page and via email to individual members of the section.

Article 14: AMENDMENTS

These Bylaws may be amended by a two-thirds vote of those members present at any annual meeting of the Section, provided that notice has been given to all members sixty days in advance, or by a two-thirds vote in an electronic ballot to all Section members.
