Weighting the benefits of incidental habitat protection
2 August 2017
ESA
University of Washington researchers compared land that had come under incidental protection through regulations, to land acquired for conservation during the same 25-year span (1990-2015), in Washington State. Lawler’s talk, on Wednesday, August 9, is part of a session on Conservation Planning, Policy, and Theory.
Adorable alpine animal acclimates behavior to a changing climate
1 August 2017
ESA
As climate change brings new pressures to bear on wildlife, species must “move, adapt, acclimate, or die.” The American pika is a model species for the study of behavioral adaptation over a diverse geographic range. USGS researcher Erik Beever will explore factors that define the pika’s distribution on Tuesday, August 8.

Odum School sends 19 faculty, student presenters to Ecological Society of America meeting
17 July 2017
University of Georgia Odum School of Ecology
How do urban landscapes influence mosquito-borne disease dynamics? Does the choice of plants and how they’re maintained affect how well pollinator gardens work as a conservation strategy? And how do municipal water withdrawals impact river connectivity, and by extension those species that migrate between estuaries and freshwater streams? These are a few of the research questions that will be addressed by students, faculty and postdoctoral associates from the University of Georgia Odum School of Ecology attending the upcoming 102nd annual meeting of the Ecological Society of America Aug. 6-11 in Portland, Ore.
Getting to the roots of Sahara mustard invasion in the American Southwest
12 July 2017
ESA
Old World Sahara mustard is spreading rapidly through southwestern U.S. deserts, smothering the native wildflowers that draw tourists to the region and disrupting the desert ecosystem. Daniel Winkler is investigating whence the invasion originated and what enabled Sahara mustard to adapt so successfully, to gain insight into how to stop it.
