Meet our Board

“I became chair of the Student Section and it changed my life. In this position, I felt like a part of the scientific community, instead of just an apprentice to it.”

— Jenny Talbot, 2008 Chair of the Student Section

2024-2025 Board

Megan Garvey: Chair

Affiliated institution: Clemson University

Hometown: Chagrin Falls, Ohio

Bio: I am beginning my journey as a PhD student in Entomology at Clemson University this Fall. I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Chicago in Biology and Visual Arts. I’m particularly interested in the way scientific information is taught and communicated, especially in informal settings like museums, social media, and parks/field schools. Hence the double major has been really useful. My M.S. also emphasized outreach, mentorship, and teaching. Along those lines, accessibility and representation in scientific fields are key parts of my work. Outside of STEM, I crochet, hike, make jewelry, and read.

Role and goals: My role as Chair will be to facilitate a smooth transition to the new board and then ensure that we accomplish our goals throughout the year. We hope to host events that engage our student members and better prepare them for the rest of their lives in this field.

 Vasavi Prakash: Vice Chair

Affiliated institution: Auburn University

Hometown: Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India

Bio: I am nearing the end of my doctoral journey at Auburn University. With a strong background in conservation biology, human dimensions, and wildlife ecology, I have cultivated a deep understanding of the complexities facing human-wildlife conflicts today. I emphasize using systems approach with interdisciplinary methods. Beyond research, I have a great passion for outreach, mentoring, and collaboration. Known for a detail-oriented and innovative mindset, I continuously seek new ways to address scientific challenges and am committed to making a meaningful impact within the field of ecology. I am eager to bring my passion for ecology and dedication to advancing our collective goals to this role. I am committed to fostering a vibrant, inclusive community within our section that encourages diverse perspectives and promotes active engagement among all members. Outside of academia, I enjoy traveling, experimenting and exploring culinary traditions, hiking, photography, and reading.

Role and goals: My role as Vice Chair is to support the Chair in ongoing efforts and learn the duties of/prepare to assume that role next year. I coordinate communication with section and chapter liaisons. I look forward to contributing to the team, and developing activities that enhance the section’s impact.

 E. Aaron Walker: Secretary

Affiliated Institution:  Morehouse College

Hometown: Birmingham, Alabama

Bio: My name is E. Aaron Walker, and I am a senior at Morehouse College, majoring in Biology on the pre-Med track with a strong interest in Environmental Studies. My career goal is to become a Pediatric Intensivist while also pursuing a role as an Assistant Professor, focusing on laboratory-based research. In the short term, I aspire to teach foundational Biology courses at a Historically Black College or University (HBCU), contributing to the academic development of students in these communities. Through my academic journey in Biology and Health Sciences, I have developed strong skills in research, data analysis, and critical thinking. These skills will be essential in addressing the unique challenges faced by minority students and in creating evidence-based solutions to support their success. Since August 2022, I have worked as a Bioscribe at the Vereen Research Institute, where I assist with biodiversity surveys, collect soil and water samples, and monitor wildlife during field research. I support data collection, statistical analysis, and the creation of research presentations. I also collaborate closely with faculty, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers to advance ecological research. As President of the Morehouse Biology and Ecology Clubs and a member of Phi Delta Epsilon, I have strengthened my leadership, communication, and presentation skills, which I believe are key to advocating for minority students and engaging with diverse stakeholders in education and policy.

Role and goals: As Secretary of the Ecological Society of America, I am dedicated to improving communication and fostering a more inclusive environment for members, particularly those from underrepresented groups. I strive to enhance collaboration among members and facilitate connections between ecological research and real-world environmental solutions.

Kivi Snavely: Social Media and Webmaster

Affiliated institution: North Dakota State University

Hometown: Lancaster, PA

Bio: Hi, I’m  Kivi and I love plants (and microbes)! Growing up in an area chock full of gardeners and nature enthusiasts, I was predisposed to biology – completing my undergraduate degree in Molecular Biology at Millersville University of Pennsylvania. During my time there, I studied the microbiome of industrial hemp plants, investigating how male and female hemp recruit different rhizosphere bacteria across life stage and cultivar. This research piqued my interest in bioinformatic and statistical methods for studying microbial interactions, which I am now working on as a Master’s student at NDSU. In my free time, I love to garden, hike with my cat, and play video games.

Role and goals: My role as Webmaster and Social Media Manager is to maintain and regularly update our social media (including Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook) and website presence with news and activities from SS and other ESA sections. I work with my fellow board members and the student liaisons of other ESA sections to display diverse and helpful posts for every student interested in ESA.

Sarah Willen-Nelson: Treasurer

Affiliated Institution: University of Missouri-St. Louis

Hometown: St. Louis, Missouri

Bio: I recently began working towards my PhD in Ecology at University of Missouri-St. Louis. My previous research focused on plant-pollinator interactions and how they are impacted by urbanization. I am currently interested in the diversification of social insects, with focus on Polistes aka paper wasps. I also focus on making science accessible and learning how to communicate scientific results in a way that is useful to a general audience. Outside of STEM I enjoy hiking and reading.

Role and goals: My role as treasurer is to maintain student accounts and communicate with financial officers at ESA.
