UA researcher Fernando T. Maestre named fellow of the Ecological Society of America

University of Alicante (UA) distinguished researcher Fernando T. Maestre has elected a Fellow of the Ecological Society of America. The appointment as fellow is a distinction for those members of this society who have made outstanding scientific contributions in the field of ecology and study of ecosystems, communication, education and pedagogy, and environmental management and policies.
Of the thirty fellows appointed in 2020, the researcher at the Ramón Margalef Multidisciplinary Institute for the Environment of the UA is the only Spaniard selected. He has been chosen “in recognition of its remarkable contributions to the ecology of arid ecosystems that have provided insight into how arid zone plant and soil communities can evolve in a warmer and drier future, and the consequences of this evolution in ecosystems, as well as for their contribution to promoting inclusive collaborative networks among ecologists around the world who are experts in arid zones “.
As Maestre acknowledges, “the fact that my professional colleagues recognize my work is a great personal satisfaction and a motivation to continue working. Furthermore, it is also a recognition of the effort and good work of all the people who have been part of my research group throughout its history, as well as that of all the colleagues with whom I have had the opportunity to collaborate with during my career. Without them, my work would hardly be worthy of this distinction. “
This recognition is a great achievement since Maestre has belonged to the Ecological Society of America since he did his doctoral thesis. “Being part of this great family of ecologists has undoubtedly contributed to my professional development,” he says.
