Holden Arboretum – Research Tour (Field Trip 1)

The Holden Arboretum (9550 Sperry Road, Kirtland, Ohio) is an incredible ecological resource in Northeast Ohio, covering 3,500 acres across Lake and Geauga counties, only 35-40 minutes from downtown Cleveland. Join us at the 67-acre Working Woods Learning Forest for three 45-minute tours about current efforts related to research (invasive plant management and beech leaf disease), forestry practices (single tree and group selection timber harvests), and conservation (wildlife habitat). (50 attendees max)

*This field trip does not include admission to the Holden Arboretum. If interested in visiting the core gardens and trails after the field trip tours conclude, a ticket can be purchased at the gatehouse.

Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve – Birding Hike (Field Trip 2)

Just a half-hour drive from Cleveland lies Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve in Mentor (8365 Harbor Dr, Mentor, OH), a major birding hotspot.  This property sits on the edge of Mentor Marsh, one of the largest natural marshes on the Lake Erie shoreline, and includes mature oak forests and shoreline dunes.  This diversity of habitats has attracted over 260 resident and migrant bird species.  Join local birders as we explore this property for an exciting morning of birding.  Bring your binoculars or email a.corbett@csuohio.edu if you want to borrow a set (we have a limited # of pairs available).  (max 20 attendees)
