Calling all Students!

This is Winslow Hansen,  your ESA Student Section Chair. I wanted to let everyone know that the ESA Student Section will be holding elections for open positions during early September. If you are interested in becoming more involved in the student section, we are taking nominations for the 2015-2016 leadership.

The Future of Ecology: Animating the Past

With funding from the Ecological Society of America’s Centennial Grant we [Student Section], in collaboration with Ecomotion Studios, have produced four short, engaging, animated videos of classical ecology papers of the last 100 years based on the Foundations of Ecology book to facilitate continued communication of these critical vessels in the overwhelming sea of journal articles.

The Microbial Ecology Section is a relatively new, yet highly energetic, ESA section. Brendan Bohannan started the section in 2007 with the goal of providing a home for ESA’s microbial ecologists. Since the formation of our section, we have seen continuous growth in section membership and the number of microbe-oriented sessions at the Annual Meeting.

By Elizabeth Cerny-Chipman, Aquatic Ecology Section Liaison

Water covers most of the Earth’s surface, so it makes sense that the Aquatic Ecology Section would encompass a lot of ESA members. United in the study of freshwater and marine ecology, there are over 800 members this largest and oldest section of ESA*. The goals of the section are to promote and coordinate aquatic ecology research and its dissemination to broader audiences. With such a breadth, it can be tough to pinpoint what the Aquatic Ecology section is all about. For me, the section is shaped by the mission of giving members opportunities to meet other ecologists working in aquatic systems, to apply for student awards, and to share research at the annual meeting and beyond.  In this post, I want to highlight some opportunities for students to engage with the section.

By Sarah Anderson, ESA Policy Section Liaison

The Policy Section is one of the newest ESA sections. It was organized in 2011 and established in 2012. The section is swiftly developing a focus on providing opportunities and opening doors for ecologists to engage with policy, especially as students and early-career ecologists.

Last year, I remember sitting in my first Student Section Meeting at the 2015 Annual ESA conference in Sacramento, not really knowing what was happening, and thinking, “How have I never heard of this organization before?”

Gaining a Policy Perspective for Early Career Scientists

By Kellen Marshall, ESA Policy Section Liaison

A policy perspective matters for ESA students more than you may think.  If engaging within the policy realm is beyond your immediate interest it probably won’t be so far removed as you transition into the workforce.

Happy Holidays! I hope that it has been restful and pleasant, or at least allowed you time to catch up on those tasks that fall through the cracks during the semester.

Leading up to the ESA Centennial meeting in Baltimore we will be hosting a monthly blog series from our student section liaisons.
