High-proof alcohol preserved century-old fish DNA to enable ‘genomic time travel’
In a study presented at this year’s annual meeting of the Ecological Society of America in Baltimore, an unusual preservative in specimen jars proved to be a sweet solution for studying changes in genetic diversity among fish populations in the Philippines since the early 1900s.
Mary Lofton earns Ecological Forecasting Outstanding Publication Award
Lofton, a researcher with Virginia Tech’s Center for Ecosystem Forecasting, was recognized for her study examining the effectiveness of an undergraduate training program that aspires to develop next generation of ecosystem forecasters, environmental data scientists, and water managers.
EEB Graduate Student Alison Robey wins Volterra Award
At the 110th meeting of the Ecological Society of America held in Baltimore, MD, Alison Robey, PhD candidate in David Vasseur’s lab won the Volterra award for best student talk on ecological theory for her presentation “Temporal autocorrelation increases temperature-driven extinction risk”.
Jalene LaMontagne, colleagues win Robert P. McIntosh Award from the Vegetation Section of the Ecological Society of America for research on community synchrony in seed production
Their study found that synchrony among species is correlated with trait similarity as well as climate.
At the Ecological Society of America’s 2025 conference, ESA’s President presents the latest results on the resilience of ecological research
Professor Peter Groffman, incoming President of the Ecological Society of America (ESA) and one of the world’s leading figures in environmental science, gave a presentation on the resilience of long-term ecological research at the ESA annual conference, held in Baltimore, USA, from 10–15 August 2025.
Which tree species are best at cooling down the city?
INSTAAR PhD student Advyth Ramachandran is investigating the cooling power of various species of urban trees. He will present his methodology and preliminary findings at the Ecological Society of America’s Annual Meeting in Baltimore.
ESA 2025: Ecology is Everywhere
The U.S National Science Foundation’s National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) is a continental-scale observation facility operated by Battelle and designed to collect long-term ecological data. Its staff, data, and even a local field site will be on full display at the Ecological Society of America’s 2025 Annual Meeting.
Annual Ecological Society meeting draws researchers from UGA

Media Tip Sheet: Urban ecology at #ESA2025
At the ESA meeting in Baltimore, Md., urban ecology will be front and center — fitting for a city that has long been a hub for research on nature in urban environments. Reflecting the meeting’s theme, “Ecology is Everywhere,” this growing field recognizes that cities are not just places where nature is degraded, but also where ecological processes thrive and evolve in unique ways.
Media Tip Sheet: Science of the Chesapeake at #ESA2025
With this year’s ESA Annual Meeting taking place in Baltimore, Md., research on the Chesapeake Bay and its watershed takes on special relevance. As the largest estuary in the United States, the Bay is a dynamic system shaped by both natural processes and human activity.
Media Tip Sheet: Artificial Intelligence at #ESA2025
At ESA’s upcoming Annual Meeting, researchers will present a wide range of Artificial Intelligence-driven ecological studies. Some focus on developing new tools and techniques, while others showcase AI’s application in the field, from identifying pollinators in images and monitoring bird calls to linking tree rings with climate data, improving forest inventories, tracking disease and predicting wetland biodiversity.
Media Tip Sheet: Symposia at #ESA2025
This year, Annual Meeting symposia will address the questions and tools at the frontiers of ecological research, wetland restoration in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, deep soil carbon storage, the return of buffalo to tribal lands and much more.
