CONICET scientists are evaluating strategies to improve grassland productivity without threatening biodiversity

Nearly half of the Earth’s surface is covered by grasslands: areas dominated by grasses and other herbaceous plants, with almost no trees. Grasslands are an essential source of food for the world, providing sustenance for many wild animals and domestic livestock such as cattle, goats, and camelids. At the same time, grasslands regulate climate and other environmental factors and support high biodiversity. However, agricultural production and increasing urbanization threaten the world’s grasslands. An international group of scientists, led by CONICET researchers Sofía Campana, Pedro Tognetti, Pamela Graff, and Laura Yahdjian from the Institute of Physiological and Ecological Research Related to Agriculture (IFEVA, UBA-CONICET), and Juan Alberti from the Institute of Marine and Coastal Research (IIMyC-CONICET), set out to study grasslands across six continents to evaluate sustainable production strategies. The result is a paper that is on the cover of the journal Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment in April 2026, one of the most prestigious journals in the field of ecology.
