Rapid evolution under climate change: Greifswald University research shows rapid genetic adaptation of the wasp spider

In just a few decades, the wasp spider (Argiope bruennichi) has expanded its range from the Mediterranean to Northern Europe – even reaching southern Finland. In doing so, it has adapted genetically more rapidly than previously thought possible. This is shown in a new study by researchers at the University of Greifswald, which has now been published in the journal Ecological Monographs. The results provide important insights into how species react to climate change – and how quickly evolution can actually occur.
