Fall 2026 ESA Council Votes

Earlier this year, the Council Leadership Team reviewed concerns regarding election procedures and leadership of an ESA section. This resulted in an agenda item on leadership continuity, which included procedures to correct issues that may arise, that was presented at the July Council meeting. Council at the time requested to vote on the matter at a later date to better review the proposal.

Subsequent review of the original matter by the Council Leadership Team and Professional Ethics Committee Chair identified a broader issue. Since not all sections and chapters of the Society have adopted updated operating protocols per the requirement set by Council in 2024, there have been ambiguity around officer eligibility, elections, succession and related matters, and some groups have become effectively leaderless.

To fulfill Council’s requirement and as a supplement to the original proposal, the Council Leadership Team recommends establishing an operating protocols template that will serve as the default governing document of all sections and chapters unless they submit an alternative. Alternatives much remain in compliance with Council requirements.

Staff will be in communication with section and chapter chairs to ensure that all groups within ESA are in full compliance by October 31. In some cases, staff will operate new nomination and election procedures to recruit fresh leadership.
